"The global freight forwarding, and transportation company Kühne & Nagel has established a subsidiary, Oy Nakutrans Ltd, in Finland. The company, which began operations at the beginning of April, has appointed Pekka Hakovirta as Managing Director and Helge Kontio as Marketing Director." This was reported in Kauppalehti on April 26, 1985.
In the early stages, our operations focused solely on air and sea freight services. In 1992, the company name was changed to Oy Kuehne+Nagel Ltd. By 1999, our team had grown to approximately 60 employees, and our service offering included air freight, sea freight, and road transport.
At the beginning of the 2000s, our operations accelerated significantly. In 2001, we acquired Niinivirta’s cargo operations and expanded to rail freight services starting a freight transport along the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 2002, train ferry operations began. In 2004, we introduced the KN Login tracking system, providing our customers with real-time shipment visibility. In 2005, we opened our air terminal in Tikkurila and expanded with new office facilities. By 2009, we had launched warehousing and logistics services for our customers.
During the 2010s, our growth continued through acquisitions and the diversification of our service portfolio. By 2010, our staff had increased to over 140 employees. In 2011, we built Finland’s first small-scale wind power park on the roof of our office and warehouse building. Kuehne+Nagel also acquired the shares of the international company RH Freight, which also had significant operations in Finland.
In the 2020s, environmental awareness has taken on an increasingly central role in our operations. For years, we have provided our customers with data on the CO₂e emissions of their shipments and actively sought ways to reduce our environmental footprint. Since 2020, our goal has been to build a greener business model, guided by our tangible Science Based Targets (SBTi) climate goals.
Now, in 2025, we celebrate our 40-year journey in Finland. Our path has been filled with change, growth, and continuous learning. Today, we employ over 160 logistics professionals in Finland, each of whom plays a vital role in our story. We operate in seven locations across the country: our headquarters and air terminal in Vantaa, as well as in Vuosaari (Helsinki), Vaasa, Pori, Tampere, and Oulu.
The past few years have been particularly challenging for the logistics industry. The pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and disruptions in supply chains have tested our entire sector. Yet, we have overcome these challenges together – with our employees, customers, and partners.
While the world around us continues to change, one thing remains constant: our commitment to serving our customers in the best possible way. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our customers, partners, and employees – without your trust and support, this journey would not have been possible.
Thank you for being part of our story. Let’s step into the next decade with courage, care, and commitment.
