Back The AKT strike will close cargo traffic at Finnish ports for two weeks

SAK-affiliated trade unions are commencing a two-week political strike starting on Monday, March 11, 2024. The strike will cause schedule and capacity changes to our normal sea and road transportations. The changes are also possible in air transportations.

The Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) and its member unions have organized several political strikes since last autumn, opposing the Finnish government’s plans to weaken employee rights and social security. Despite negotiations between SAK and the government, no agreement has been reached. As a result, SAK-affiliated trade unions are commencing a two-week political strike. The Finnish Transport Workers' Union (AKT) has announced its participation in the strikes. The strike is scheduled to begin on March 11, 2024, at 06:00 and end on March 25, 2024, at 06:00. Consequently, the operations in Finnish ports will be stopped. A list of companies affected by the strike can be found on AKT’s website.

The strike will cause schedule and capacity changes to our normal sea and road transportations. The changes are also possible in air transportations.

Sea logistics:
Sea logistics: The strike in stevedoring industry will stop operations in ports: the loading and unloading of vessels in Finnish ports will be interrupted. We ask our customers to consider that containers cannot be picked up from or delivered to the ports during the strike.

Air logistics:
So far, there has been no disruptions in the airfreight shipments leaving or arriving by air from or to Finland.  Some air freight shipments include pick or delivery by road and ferry connection between Finland and Central Europe where changes in schedule might occur. Due to the strike, there might be unexpected delays and additional fees, which will be informed and agreed on separately.

Road logistics:
During the strike, unaccompanied trailers will not be handled at ports. Kuehne+Nagel has the option to, case-by-case, ship export and import trailers as combinations for an additional fee.

After the strike, there will be congestion at the terminals, so it’s advisable to prepare for possible delays.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the strike.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Kuehne+Nagel representative.
